The Four Churches
St. John's-in-the-Square

The Church of St. John in the Square
St John’s parish has been a focus of major redevelopment and regeneration in recent years. The morning services have very faithful and committed people many who have been part of the worshipping community for their whole lives.

Few now live within the district but St John's is discovering a new identity as a City Centre church serving all ages.

The regular pattern of worship in St John’s is as follows:

Sunday
10.30am Sung Eucharist (Common Worship, traditional language)

Wednesday
10.30am Holy Communion (Book of Common Prayer)

St. John’s is a magnificent 18th century building. There is a notable and very fine Renatus Harris organ, which was recently restored. The church has an excellent acoustic and has been recognised as one of the best places in the city for concerts both choral and orchestral. There is a Friends of St. John’s Charity, which has been supported mainly through individual bequests and legacies. It has enabled much needed restoration and refurbishment work to be done on the church.

As the City Centre continues to develop, St John’s is expanding its ministry, making the churchyard a relaxing, comfortable and peaceful retreat in the heart of the City, providing rest and refreshment for shoppers and workers and caring for young adults.
